Chesil Beach Visitor Centre, Portland

BAQUS were appointed by Dorset County Council as Quantity Surveyors for the provision of a new Visitor Centre at Chesil Beach, Portland, Dorset

The multi-stakeholder scheme was first envisaged in 2002 and following an award of £550,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the Centre was completed in time for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games sailing events, being hosted in nearby Weymouth.

The scheme included the redevelopment of the existing interpretation room, kiosk and public toilets to provide exciting new facilities, education space, indoor care, forecourt area and broadwalk. Access and parking was improved, with a new car park entrance and general accessibility for people with disabilities.

The new Centre is managed by Dorset Wildlife Trust.

Partners involved with the scheme include: Weymouth & Portland Borough Council, the Crown Estate, the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Team, Dorset County Council, Dorset Wildlife Trust, Natural England and Ilchester Estate.
