St Albans Old Town Hall

We were commissioned by St Albans City and District Council as Quantity Surveyors and CDM Co-ordinators for the four-phase repair and renovation of the Grade 1 Listed Old Town Hall complex.

This prominent Victorian building at the heart of the city centre was restored to its former grandeur and remodelled as a multi-purpose events and arts centre with a franchised restaurant on the ground floor. Substantial works were required to achieve DDA compliance. The historic courtroom and basement cells were renovated and improved to allow public access.

Works were carried out to the Tourist Information Centre, public meeting rooms and National Trust shop. External fabric repairs were included. Under a separate commission we provided a one-stop consultancy for re-roofing the building, which is in much demand as a film set, following damage during filming for James Bond.

Whilst the works were on-site, the Client proposed additional works in remodelling existing underground toilets below the adjacent market square and our commission was extended accordingly. A lump sum price was negotiated with the main contractor.

The project was successfully completed on time and within budget. This was a repeat commission for a longstanding client and since completion we have been re-commissioned to carry out a number of further projects in the arts, museum and sports sectors.
